Build segment rules

Who can use this feature?

  • Odie admins can create and manage segments.

Segment rules decide which records belong to a segment. Use them to define which records match based on fields from the Primary Object and from related objects.

Build a rule

Each rule can include four parts:

Part What it controls
Object The record type that contains the field.
Field The property or related record measurement that Odie evaluates.
Operator How Odie compares the field with the value you choose.
Value The value a record must match. Some operators do not require a value.
  1. Open a new segment. To change an existing segment, open it and select Edit Criteria.
  2. Under Segment Rules, select Add Filter.
  3. Choose the object that contains the field you want to use. The list includes the Primary Object and any related objects available in Odie.
  4. Choose a field.
  5. Choose an operator, then enter or select a value when required.

Add one rule at a time. Generate a preview after each change so you can see how the rule affects the results.

Combine rules with And and Or

  • And: Every item in the group must match.
  • Or: Any item in the group can match.

Select Add Inner Group when you need to combine And and Or logic. The And or Or selection applies only to the items inside that group.

Example: The root group requires Renewal Window to equal Next 90 days. An inner Or group accepts either Enterprise or Strategic for Customer Tier. The segment includes accounts that meet the renewal condition and either tier condition.

Choose the right operator

The operators available in the builder depend on the field you select.

Field type Common operators
Text or select Equals, Not Equals, In, Not In, Contains
Number Equals, Greater Than, Less Than, Between
Date Equals, Between, Within Next, Within Past, and period options
Blank values Is Null, Is Not Null
Related records Exists, Does Not Exist, or count comparisons when available

Not every field supports every operator. Odie shows only the choices that apply to the selected field.

Use related and external objects

You can use a related object when a relationship exists between it and the Primary Object. This includes external objects that are enabled and connected through a relationship in Odie.

  1. Select Add Filter.
  2. Choose the related object.
  3. Choose its field, operator, and value.

If an object or field does not appear, confirm that the object is related to the Primary Object and that its data is available in Odie.

Preview the results

  1. Select Generate Preview.
  2. Review the total matches and the sample records.
  3. Change a rule if needed, then select Update Preview.

The preview does not refresh automatically when you change a rule.

FAQs

Question: Why is an object or field missing?

Answer: Available objects and fields depend on the Primary Object, the data available in your Odie instance, and the relationships between objects.

Question: Why did the list of operators change?

Answer: Odie shows operators that work with the selected field type. Date, number, text, and relationship fields support different comparisons.

Question: Does Or apply to every rule in the segment?

Answer: Or applies only to the items in its current group. Use an inner group to control how one set of rules works with the rest of the segment.

Question: Can I change the Primary Object while building rules?

Answer: You can choose the Primary Object while creating the segment. After you create it, the Primary Object cannot be changed. Create a new segment to use a different Primary Object.
